01 — About the press

We turn outcrops into knowledge

01
Since 1974 • Non-profit pressGeologists in mountains studying strata

Born in a university basement with a mimeograph and a box of thin sections, today we are the largest independent geologic publisher on the open web.

We publish peer-reviewed bulletins, reprint out-of-print surveys, digitize hand-drawn maps at 1200 dpi, and fund field schools. Every volume is reviewed by two active field geologists and one cartographer. No paywalls for maps older than 5 years. No jargon without explanation.

◍
What we publish. Regional geology, stratigraphic columns, fossil atlases, ore deposit models, hazard maps, thesis series, expedition diaries and K-12 rock kits.
◎
How we verify. Double-blind review + field check. 34% rejection rate. All localities GPS-verified, all dates lab-crosschecked, all maps ground-truthed.
⬢
Why open. Geology saves lives — landslides, aquifers, critical minerals. Knowledge locked in drawers helps no one. 78% of our archive is free PDF.
